With the rise of generative search engines \u2014ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews\u2014 the bar for source selection is much higher. And your infrastructure\u2019s speed plays a direct role in whether your content appears in the responses received by millions of users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post, we outline how a CDN can boost AI mentions of your business \u2014 and what <em>bot<\/em> management strategies you can implement to make automated reading easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How AI Crawlers Work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI system crawlers make real-time web queries when building their responses. When a user asks \u201cwhat\u2019s the best CDN provider in Europe?\u201d, the system fires requests at search results, visits candidate pages, and extracts the content it needs to construct its answer. The entire process takes seconds. And if your server doesn\u2019t respond in time, the <em>crawler<\/em> moves on to the next source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The figure that circulates in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Generative_engine_optimization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GEO<\/a> (Generative Engine Optimization) space is concrete: AI engine retrieval systems operate with <em>timeouts<\/em> of between 1 and 3 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not an officially published threshold by OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic. But the technical consensus among industry professionals is clear: if your server takes more than 2\u20133 seconds to return content, the risk of your page being excluded from the set of sources the system considers increases significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Content delivery networks can significantly improve TTFB \u2014 <em>Time to First Byte<\/em>. We\u2019ve explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/blog\/la-cdn-y-los-core-web-vitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous posts<\/a> how CDNs work, but to give you an idea: with an origin server in Central Europe, a crawler in the US can experience a TTFB of over 1 second. With a CDN, that number drops to milliseconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bot Management: Open the Door to AI Crawlers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reducing TTFB is a necessary condition, but not sufficient. There\u2019s no point in responding in 80ms if your configuration blocks the crawler before it even starts measuring. And this happens more often than you\u2019d think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many CDNs, <em>hosting<\/em> platforms, and CMS systems have started adding restrictive rules by default in response to increased AI <em>bot<\/em> traffic. The result: sites that have unknowingly blocked GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot, and whose owners wonder why they don\u2019t appear in generative responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Key Distinction: Search vs. Training<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before configuring anything, it\u2019s important to understand that AI crawlers don\u2019t just do one thing. Most platforms use at least two separate functions with distinct <em>user-agents<\/em>: the training <em>bot<\/em> (which uses your content to improve the model) and the real-time search <em>bot<\/em> (which retrieves your content when a user asks a question).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To appear in generative responses, the search <em>bot<\/em> is what matters. You can block the training bot if you don\u2019t want your content used as fine-tuning data, and still be cited in real-time responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recommended Configuration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first level of control is the <em>robots.txt<\/em> file. An explicit configuration avoids the most common mistake: having a wildcard User-agent: * Disallow: \/ with exceptions only for Googlebot, so all AI <em>bots<\/em> get caught in the generic rule unintentionally. Review your <em>robots.txt<\/em> and make sure AI <em>bots<\/em> have their own explicit Allow directive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you also use a <em>bot<\/em> management service like our Bot Management, you should keep the ai_scraper flag <strong>disabled<\/strong> to allow AI crawler access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The relationship between web speed and AI mentions is not direct, but it is real and measurable. Generative search engines select sources in real time under strict time constraints. A slow server actively reduces the likelihood of your content appearing in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But speed alone is not enough. Your <em>robots.txt<\/em> and CDN configuration determine whether those crawlers can even access your content.
