More than 55 million people were suddenly disconnected from their daily routines \u2014 but not from information. In the absence of clear answers, user behavior was immediate and decisive: they looked for explanations. Where? In the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Transparent Edge, we support some of the most-read digital newspapers in Spain (according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dircomfidencial.com\/medios\/asi-queda-la-clasificacion-de-audiencias-de-gfk-tras-el-ajuste-metodologico-20250319-0404\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GfK DAM<\/a>), which gives us a privileged vantage point to observe how web traffic reacts in real time during unexpected events. This time, we analyzed data from three major general news outlets powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/en\/solutions-by-sector\/media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our network.<\/a> While the publications differ, their traffic graphs tell a remarkably similar story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The curve of curiosity: a spike after the incident, and again as connectivity returns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large imagen-responsive\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/General-information-journal-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/General-information-journal-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/General-information-journal-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/General-information-journal-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/General-information-journal.png 1128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image imagen-responsive\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-qw.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXedGdqOZ1qSir4d9YI1PC5BN7f7YMCOkZAL0ZzIermD2WKvu_Jpsc9y-UzB0t9-Xhn9TcQwyNA6Xh0HTz2lGgQt3noXWB8Cu6ie5y6xbnJN-_lZWiVs7urZytKBiOkDJSEcwNPaAQ?key=RAk2nuq-t8sI07HvBMOiLZlz\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image imagen-responsive\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-qw.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdl1st5EmfD06fCci8fVYCqiIZNd8ustdYtwFMA1m2I0h6fSdndvQf33ND3tTbVj4jtPsWgYDJ3fHJaCyGiaaqFAtlWrm8vy5x-lpq84llXkXuuu9CyoBoiR5ax-V1Om0_UuFv4vw?key=RAk2nuq-t8sI07HvBMOiLZlz\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All three media outlets displayed the same traffic pattern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A sharp spike in traffic around <strong>12:40 PM<\/strong>, just seven minutes after the blackout began. This surge reflects users\u2019 immediate response to uncertainty \u2014 what happened, which areas were affected, and why.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>gradual decline<\/strong>, starting about half an hour later as people began to move around, and deepening as <strong>mobile antenna backup batteries started to fail<\/strong>, around <strong>4:00 PM<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>gradual recovery starting around 7:00 PM<\/strong>, ending with a final peak late in the day, as people regained connectivity and searched for information about what had happened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not everything goes dark: foreign traffic remains<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One noteworthy observation: even at the lowest point of the blackout, all three news sites continued receiving traffic from <strong>outside Spain<\/strong>. Some were likely residents abroad, regular readers, or curious users from other regions trying to follow the news as it unfolded. It\u2019s a reminder that digital reach goes well beyond physical borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital media: a critical lifeline in times of crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While radio may have had the broadest reach during the incident, our analysis clearly shows that digital media plays a <strong>vital role in providing real-time, reliable information<\/strong> during moments of uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the ubiquity of smartphones, news can be accessed <strong>anytime, anywhere<\/strong>, making online platforms essential. This presents a challenge for digital media CTOs: ensuring infrastructure can withstand sudden surges in concurrent user requests without service interruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newspapers we analyzed saw <strong>traffic increases between 40% and 50%<\/strong> at peak moments.
