It sits between the web and the potential attacker, so it acts as a wall with a defensive role. The functionalities depend on how it&#8217;s implemented, and the rules that are applied. Nevertheless, it\u2019s vital to have a WAF so you don\u2019t have to worry about website damages that can be prevented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You shouldn\u2019t only think about the worst scenarios that a security vulnerability can cause, such as data theft and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/blog\/que-es-ransomware-y-como-identificarlo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ransomware<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Low level vulnerabilities can still affect your website, your organization and complicate your life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VULNERABILITIES IN NGINX &#8211; LDAP<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, the open source web server <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nginx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGINX<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has confirmed the existence of security vulnerabilities on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nginx.com\/blog\/addressing-security-weaknesses-nginx-ldap-reference-implementation\/#condition-2rs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LDAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reference implementation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This scenario is dangerous when command-line parameters are used to configure the Python daemon, when unused parameters are used in the configuration that can be overwritten, or when the authentication depends on belonging to a specific group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WAF: SECURITY AGAINST WEB ATTACKS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To mitigate these security flaws, you can take different actions. One of them is inhibiting the passing of HTTP headers in NGINX, which can be done with the following directive in the NGINX configuration file: proxy_pass_request_headers off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another one is to filter out strange characters in login forms, such as special characters with meaning in LDAP: hyphens -, parentheses () and the equal sign =.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WAF AND FIREWALL<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WAFs and Firewalls are used to protect websites and can complement each other. Each one covers certain vulnerabilities. While the standard firewall prevents the entry of non authorized traffic to private networks and protects the traffic to the servers, the WAF filters and blocks the traffic that goes to and from a web application.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WAF also proactively monitors web application vulnerabilities, observes network weakness and patches these weak points to mitigate short-term problems and establish long-term solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TRANSPARENT EDGE\u2019S WAF<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transparent Edge\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clients that have our<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparentedge.eu\/en\/edge-security-en\/waf-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WAF<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are protected against the vulnerabilities confirmed by NGINX.
